Helix Rakes Scripps Ranch as Scotties Combine for 8-0 Shutout

Highlanders bring down No. 3 seed Falcons to advance in Division II CIF baseball playoffs.

Serenaded by “quack, quack” calls from his own dugout, senior Jake Reed led Helix Charter High School over visiting Scripps Ranch 8-0 Friday to help his team advance in Division II of the CIF San Diego playoffs. Reed didn’t object to the duck imitations—he’ll play baseball next year for the University of Oregon.

The No. 2-seed Scotties (23-9) took a 6-0 lead after three innings, and junior Daryl Bibbs powered a solo home run in the sixth in front of nearly packed stands under sunny skies with temps in the high 70s.

After Reed’s six-inning gem, the Falcons loaded the bases against closer Mauro Olivarria in the seventh, but a double play ended the game, stranding No. 3 seed Scripps Ranch in the double-elimination tournament.

The Scotties, coached by Cole Holland, will host a fourth-round game Tuesday at Helix against the winner of Saturday's Scripps Ranch-Valhalla elimination game, so Scripps (21-9) could be returning to La Mesa.

After Friday's game, the Highlanders went to the storage shed for rakes—and their postgame chores of preparing the infield for the next game.
