Helix, Hiller Stars of the Future: JV Players are Diamonds in the Rough

Grossmont beats visiting Helix 8-2 in junior varsity baseball showdown as next year's stars step up to the plate. In varsity showdown, Scotties upset Hillers 4-2.

Junior varsity baseball players from host Grossmont and Helix Charter High School did battle under cold and windy conditions Monday, with the Hillers prevailing 8-2 after a five-run fifth inning. Hot chocolate was consumed in mass quantities by parent spectators (and a second batch had to be whipped up). But for the JV athletes, it’s all about raising their game and getting hot for varsity play next year.

Across town, Helix pitcher Jake Reed held Grossmont varsity to two runs in a 4-2 win by the host Scotties. Reed also led Highlanders hitters with a double. Singles were scattered by Kacy Smith, Diego Reynoso, Brandon Lewis and Mauro Olivarria. Eric Eckley pitched for Grossmont. Robbie Nesovic had a double for the Hillers. Singles were smacked by Joe Musgrove, Tyler Timmer (two), Derek Rustich, Alex Connor and Will Soto. The Scotties raised their league record to 5-6 in league, and favored Grossmont fell to 9-2.
