Helix Girls Exit CIF Hoops Tournament at the Hands of Monte Vista

Monarchs outscore visiting Scotties 52-39, advance to semifinals Tuesday against Westview High School, which beat Scripps Ranch.

Senior point guard Deanna Bembry and junior center Shamonique “Mo” Boyd, with 14 and 10 points, respectively, led Monte Vista High School over visiting Helix Charter High School 52-39 to advance in the Division II tournament of the CIF San Diego section girls basketball championships.

Friday night’s game saw Highlander Kim Scott total a game-high 18 points, but the Scotties’ next best scorers were Jasmine Hunn and Jackie Smith, with 5 points apiece—as the team scored 6 points in the first period and 7 in the third.

The Monarchs, coached by Michael Skibbe, advance to Tuesday’s semifinals, and will meet Westview High School after its 47-44 victory over Scripps Ranch. Helix, under the guidance of Dean Brunson, ended its season with a record of 14-11.
