Helix Finds Another Gear in Final Period for Hoops Sweep of Grossmont

Kaelen Mitchell leads the Highlanders with 20 points as Helix takes home-and-away series.

Helix Charter High School trailed host Grossmont until 8 minutes left in the game, but outscored its crosstown rival 20-7 in the final period Tuesday night to win 54-41 and sweep its home-and-away series in boys basketball.

On Jan. 15, Helix defeated visiting Grossmont 65-46.

On Tuesday, senior forward Kaelen Mitchell led Helix and all scorers with 20 points, helped by the 14 points of Romario Wilson. Freshman center Tom Rutherford led the Foothillers with 14 points as senior forward Austin Swisher added 13.

Coach John Singer’s Scotties saw their season record rise to 15-8, while Frank Foggiano’s Hillers fell to 13-9. Helix travels to Granite Hills in El Cajon for a game at 7 p.m. Friday, while Grossmont hosts West Hills the same night.
