Grossmont Falls to Torrey Pines in CIF Division I Volleyball Quarterfinals

Falcons upset the host Foothillers in five games; GHS ended remarkable season with a record of 29-6.

In a hard fought match Saturday evening, Grossmont High School was upset by visiting Torrey Pines in the second round of the CIF San Diego Division I volleyball playoffs.

It seemed at first that No. 6 seed Torrey Pines might take No. 3 seed Grossmont in 1-2-3 fashion, but the Hillers leaped ahead to win the third game, and then dominated the fourth, up 20-7 at one point. The Falcons edged the Foothillers 15-12 in the decisive fifth game to raise their record to 20-13.

With Grossmont Principal Dan Barnes looking on, the Falcons beat GHS in the first two games 25-23 and 25-21. The Foothillers won the next two games 25-23 and 25-13. The quarterfinal match was punctuated with long volleys that were applauded by fans on both sides.

The Hillers, coached by Sara Ortiz, had a bye in the first round of CIF and finished the season with a record of 29-6.
