Grossmont coach Tom Karlo called the season phenomenal and praised his players Friday night despite losing to South County power Eastlake High School in the CIF Division I football semifinals in Chula Vista.
The Hillers couldn’t stop the running game of the Titans, who prevailed 59-37 amid foggy conditions. Hundreds of Grossmont fans and families made the trip south to cheer the Hillers, who ended their first season under Karlo at 9-3.
Never far from their minds was Ron Murphy, their coach who died in February, and the season Grossmont dedicated in his memory. Murphy would have been proud of them, too, Karlo told his players afterward. But next season should prove fruiful too—with junior quarterback Anthony Lawrence returning.
