Grossmont Falls Short In League Championship Lacrosse Game

Granite Hills beats Hillers 5-4 at Grossmont High, taking advantage of "good bounces" and early lead.

Grossmont High School fell behind 3-1 in the first quarter and trailed 5-2 in the fourth before scoring two goals with minutes left in the Grossmont Hills League championship game in lacrosse. Running out of time against visiting Granite Hills High of El Cajon, the Hillers lost 5-4 to a team they had beaten 7-4 in mid-April. But Foothillers coach J.J. Miramontes said “some good bounces” for Granite Hills had helped put Grossmont in an early hole.

Questionable officiating calls may have played a part as well, although Miramontes shrugged these off after the game ending about 8:45 p.m. Saturday. Charlie Smith scored twice for the Hillers, helped by goals from Hunter Jones and Tim Schwartz. Leading the Eagles was Frank Sporleder, who had three goals. Cole Aylward and Sean Campbell each added a goal. Grossmont should advance to the CIF San Diego Section playoffs a week from now, with seeding expected Thursday.
