Grossmont College Student, Living Out of Car, Has Drive to Attain MBA

Fernando Rico gave up his home so he could better afford school and says: "I actually love it."

For 42-year-old Fernando Rico, going back to school was more than just figuring out his class schedule. Recently laid off at Wells Fargo, he decided to move into his SUV in order to put more money toward an education―an idea he got from a psych major he met at Alliant International University.

“He made it look so easy,” said Rico, who attends Grossmont College and stays in La Mesa. “If you were to ask me before I did it, I would say, ‘Oh no, I’d never do that.’ But I actually love it.”

He’s gotten into the swing of things since he started 14 months ago. He put a lot of stuff into storage, and is down to four bags for his shirts, shorts, dirty laundry and underwear, towels and socks. He pays his total monthly expenses of $300 with a student loan, including his membership in 24 Hour Fitness.

“That’s the key right there because I’m able to take showers and it’s open 24/7,” said Rico, who gave up his cell phone to save money.

After meeting his general education requirements, he plans on transferring to San Diego State University to earn a master’s in business administration. He says putting everything on hold―even potential relationships―is worth it for the outcome.

“Climbing up the ladder is hard if you don’t have a degree, and having an MBA opens up a lot of doors,” he said.
