Grossmont Beats Ramona 24-20 After Coming Back From 20 Points Down

Foothillers defeat visiting Bulldogs in season opener for both teams.

Spotting its rival three touchdowns in the first 12 minutes, the Grossmont High School football team had reason to panic.  But the remaining three periods told a story of poise Friday night as the Foothillers came back to defeat visiting Ramona in the season opener for both schools.

Ramona dominated in the first quarter, racing to a 20-0 lead by early in the second period. But Grossmont came back on three scoring passes by sophomore quarterback Anthony Lawrence to go ahead 21-20 at halftime. The Hillers added a field goal by J.T. Barnes in the only scoring of the second half to prevail 24-20.

Ryan Green caught two touchdown passes for Grossmont. Defenders Ryan Davis-Tucker and Taylor Rathbun were instrumental in shutting down Ramona’s offense with seven quarterback sacks and three turnovers as coach Ron Murphy’s Hillers opened the season with a narrow victory.

Josh Anderson made the third touchdown.

“With a score of 20-0, a lot of teams will roll over, but [my team] never gave up,” Murphy said, noting their tenacity and confidence was what made the difference in the game.

Lawrence, who brought Grossmont back in the second quarter, said after the game: “I feel great. It was a lot of fun.”

The Hiller defense held Ramona to 40 rushing yards in 34 carries, mainly due to the sacks on Bulldog quarterback Hunter McHargue, who did complete a pair of touchdown passes to Keyanis Crichlow from 64 and 10 yards out. Kirk Kaliszewski opened the scoring for Ramona on a 10-yard run.
