Grossmont Grabs First Boys Basketball Victory of Young Season

Derek Rustich and Robby Nesovic lead Hillers over visiting Mira Mesa in Titan Tip-Off Classic.

Junior forward Derek Rustich scored 26 points and senior forward Robby Nesovic added 20 Wednesday night to lead Grossmont High School to its first boys basketball victory of the season, beating visiting Mira Mesa 68-67.

Grossmont scored four points in the frantic last minute to edge the Marauders in the ongoing Titan Tip-Off Classic.  The Hillers’ record rose to 1-3, after earlier losses to major powers Eastlake, Poway and La Costa Canyon.

For Grossmont, junior Bilal Rahim netted 8 points, junior Austin Swisher 6, senior Ryan Cooksey 4 and senior Steven Williams and sophomore Anthony Lawrence 2 each.

Coached by Frank Foggiano, in his 31st year, Grossmont has eight returning players in varsity and four seniors.

“This was a good win for us,” Foggiano said. “We got those points in the last minute and that was without Nesovic, so the others saw that they could play too. ... We're going to be just fine this year.”
