Foothiller Frustration: 28-28 Tie With Bonita Vista Amid Lost Chances

Cliffhanger until the end, Hillers miss a field goal with 4 seconds left in the game and other scoring opportunities.

A series of missed opportunities forced Grossmont High School to accept a 28-28 football tie Friday night against visiting Bonita Vista of Chula Vista. One interception*, a blocked punt, a fumble and a wide field goal attempt derailed the Hillers.

Bonita Vista was first to score, but Foothillers Ryan Green and Trent Galkoski charged back with touchdowns in the first quarter to put their team ahead 14-7.

Bonita Vista scored in the second quarter, which resulted in a 14-14 tie at the half. In the second half, Ryan Davis-Tucker shined as he scored two rushing touchdowns—one from 45 yards out—putting the Hillers up 28-14 in the third quarter. Davis-Tucker carried 28 times for 149 yards in the game.

A strong defense kept Bonita Vista off the board in the third quarter, but in the final quarter, the Barons took advantage of Grossmont missed opportunites and scored twice to tie the score.

After BV scored with under a minute left to tie the score, Jeff Bowers' 51-yard kickoff return put Grossmont in position to win with a field goal.

With 4.1 seconds to go in the game, J.T. Barnes, who easily made the extra points throughout the game, was wide on a field goal from 47 yards after a penaly and a minus-yardage running play added nearly 10 yards to the distance.

Sophomore quarterback Anthony Lawrence was 18 of 25 passing for the Hillers, good for 188 yards. Grossmont (2-0-1) has a bye next Friday and will play at 2-0 Mar Vista in Imperial Beach on Sept. 30.
