Free HOME Foreclosure Clinic

Since June 2007, more than 10,000 San Diego County homeowners have attended a HOME Clinic in which homeowners struggling to pay their mortgage, including those facing foreclosure, receive free one-on-one counseling about their individual mortgage situation from lending representatives, attorneys and housing officials as well as an “action plan” before they leave the event. The HOME Clinic stands for “Home Owners Mobile Education.”

The majority of attendees of the HOME Clinic fall into two categories: homeowners at immediate risk of foreclosure and those that owe more on their mortgage then there home is worth.

Those facing foreclosure first meet one-on-one with an experienced attorney that guides the homeowner through their legal options. Pro bono attorneys from various bar associations in San Diego provide legal education and resources. Next, those in imminent danger of foreclosure meet with a counselor from a HUD approved housing agency to discuss potential remedies.

Homeowners that are underwater in their mortgage also meet one-on-one with a housing counselor before speaking to an experienced attorney. If necessary, these homeowners could then meet with a bank representative at the HOME Clinic.

Other options are a short sale, which helps homeowners avoid foreclosure, and “Keep Your Home California,” a program that enables borrowers to catch up on their mortgage payments, relocate after a short sale, or cut their principals.

The event is also sponsored by the East San Diego County Association of Realtors. Real estate professionals will also be on hand to educate homeowners about the short sales process.
