Escondido High School upset host Helix Charter High School 76-67 in double overtime Wednesday night to advance to the second round of the CIF San Diego boys basketball playoffs.
The Cougar victory in Division I came thanks to superior ball handling and steals—and a poor Scottie performance at the free-throw line. Helix made only 4 of 9 shots.
Tenth-seeded Escondido and 7th-seeded Helix were tied at 65 after the first overtime, but the Cougars outscored the Scotties 11-2 in the final four minutes.
Senior forward Kaelen Mitchell led Helix with 20 points (including three three-pointers), followed by senior guard Titus Young (12 points) and senior forward Romario Wilson (11). John Singer’s Helix team ended the season at 17-10.
