Defense Shines as Stalford Pitches Grossmont Into CIF Semifinals

Host Hillers defeat Escondido 2-0 as pitcher throws a one-hitter, with five strikeouts.

Pitching on 16 hours’ rest, Rachel Stalford threw a one-hit complete game Saturday as a strong Hiller defense led Grossmont High School over visiting Escondido High 2-0 in the CIF San Diego softball playoffs.  The latest victory advances the Foothillers to the Division I semifinals Thursday at the Poway Sports Complex.

Stalford struck out five Cougars under sunny skies, and went 2-for-2 at the plate, with an intentional walk. Kaitlyn Nicks was the next to bat after the walk, and drove in Stalford with her single. Aubrie May went 2-for-3 with a double and a single, and Sarah Nicks and Amanda Porter both had singles.

“They have ability,” said Grossmont coach Jerry Lerud. “Now they are showing that they have the heart to go all the way.”
