Crunch Time at Hand: CIF and League Titles in Local Sights

Grossmont and Helix Charter High School begin final journey to section glory in sports including lacrosse, tennis, track, volleyball and swimming.

CIF San Diego section competition begins this week with showdowns in tennis and volleyball.   The Grossmont boys tennis team (No. 14) travels to face third-seeded La Costa Canyon in the first round Tuesday.  

In Division I boys volleyball, Grossmont with a league record of 9-1 hosts Sweetwater (6-6) in a match at 7 p.m. Tuesday.   In Division II of boys volleyball, Helix (7-3) is home for a first-round match against Hoover (3-7) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.  

In climactic league action, the Grossmont girls lacrosse team hosts Monte Vista at 4 p.m. Tuesday, vying for the league championship. At the same time, the Helix girls face Santana, which needs a win for an outright league title.

Gynmastics league finals are at 4 p.m Tuesday at Granite Hills High School in El Cajon.   In swimming, varsity finals are at 4:30 Friday at Grossmont.   Track and field varsity finals are also Friday at Valhalla.

Boys lacrosse CIF seedings are expected Thursday, with Grossmont in the mix.
