Are You Ready for Football? Scotties and Hillers Train for Sept. 2 Openers

Helix and Grossmont hope for successful seasons in the wake of both making CIF last year.

Football players for Grossmont and Helix Charter high schools were out in pads Friday, ending their first and second weeks of preseason practice, respectively.  Ron Murphy’s Foothillers and Troy Starr’s Highlanders—where school started Wednesday—are preparing for their Sept. 2 openers.  Grossmont will host Ramona and Helix will host perennial powerhouse Eastlake of Chula Vista in nonleague games. Helix also has a scheduled scrimmage at Fallbrook High School on Aug. 26.

The Scotties swept their Grossmont Hills League schedule last year, going 5-0, and ended the season with an 11-1 record, losing to eventual CIF Division II champion Oceanside in the semifinals.  The Hillers went 3-2 in league and 9-3 overall, losing in double overtime to Mira Mesa in a quarterfinal CIF Division I game.
