'From Collier to Carrefour' - Journey Church Offers Help for Haiti

Church college-age group holds event in order to raise funds to get 20 college-age people from Journey Community Church to Carrefour, Haiti this summer to put on a summer camp for Haitian children.

“From Collier to Carrefour” is a grassroots event Sunday put on by a group of college-age kids from the La Mesa area. The event will be held in order to raise funds to get 20 college-age people from Journey Community Church to Carrefour, Haiti, this summer to put on a summer camp for Haitian children.

The camp will give the children a chance to eat five days in a row (something most of them do not get to do regularly), along with providing arts, crafts and music each morning. They will also be providing a soccer and dance camp in the afternoons.

The fundraising event will take place in Collier Park—a small park in La Mesa known by locals for “illegitimate use.” You can often find liquor bottles, trash, graffiti, and all sorts of drug paraphernalia lying around the park.

If you were to ask most people in the neighborhood, including local police, about the “illegitimate users” (mostly teenagers) who hang around the park, they would more than likely have a few horror stories to share.

The college group from Journey Community Church hopes to help change the park’s reputation. Over the last year, they’ve held events to restore the park to a place friendly and welcoming to the local community.

In their time spent at the park, the college-age group has become very close with some of the Collier Park dwellers, even becoming a community.

In fact, several of the people who Journey’s college-age group met in the park are registered to attend the trip to Haiti this July.

“From Collier to Carrefour” will feature live music, an art auction, live art, and hand-made crafts including — purses, beanies, and jewelry.

All items and performances have been put together by college-age people looking to support their La Mesa community and help Haiti as well.

If you’d like to come out and support change both here locally, and globally, meet us at Collier Park this Sunday from 4-7 p.m. The address is 4401 Palm Ave., La Mesa CA 91941.

Donations can also be made to Journey Community Church with “Send new format to Haiti” in the memo line, and sent to 8363 Center Drive #6C La Mesa, CA 91942. All donations are tax-deductible.

We look forward to seeing you out there!
