Navy Honors Congresswoman Susan Davis with the Distinguished Public Service Award

Rep. Susan Davis recieves navy's highest civilian honor.

The highest award the Navy gives to a civilian was awarded to Congresswoman Susan Davis.  Secretary of the Navy Ray Maybus presented Davis, a member of the House Armed Services Committee, with the Distinguished Public Service Award for her "long and selfless service to the Nation's Sailors and Marines."

“One of the joys of my job is working on behalf of the men and women who sacrifice so much to keep us safe,” said Davis. “Our nation’s servicemembers are some of the most impressive people I have met.  Their ability to adapt to the unique challenges they face everyday is inspiring. I want to thank Secretary Maybus for this honor.”

As Ranking Member of the Subcommittee on Military Personnel, Davis works closely with her colleagues to meet the needs of our servicemembers and their families.  Sexual assault, women in combat, the repeal of Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell and the rebuilding of the foundation at Arlington Cemetery are just a few of the issues that Davis has delved into wholeheartedly.

With the number of suicides and attempted suicides of our returning warriors increasing, Davis has been engaged with her colleagues and the Department of Defense to ensure that every resource necessary is available to our brave men and women.

The Distinguished Public Service Award, awarded only by the Secretary of the Navy, is the highest award for a non-Navy individual and is given for contributions that have had Navy-wide, or beyond, impact.
