Readers' Choice Poll: Where to Get the Best Burrito in the La Mesa Area

Burritos come in all kinds, from carne to pollo to veggies. And perhaps even the breakfast variety. Where does your favorite call home?

There is a long list of amazing contributions to the United States from Mexico: telenovelas, Julio Cesar Chavez (both the boxer and the activist), Adrian Gonzalez's sweet swing, just to name a few.

But perhaps the most impactful of those contributions is the tried and true burrito.

In my short 12 years in San Diego, I've had roughly 8,700 taco shop burritos. And you know what? It NEVER sounds like a bad idea to have another.

Burrito joints are like flavors of jelly beans or members of the Spice Girls – everyone has their favorite. And you simply cannot get someone to switch allegiances on this. Your favorite is your favorite, no questions asked.

So now we ask you: Where is your favorite place to get a burrito in the La Mesa-Mount Helix area? And this week, we are expanding the poll a little bit. With the proliferation of taco shops and Mexican restaurants in the Spring Valley community, we'll include some popular spots from there as well.

Here are a handful of our favorites:

#3 (University Ave.)

(Lake Murray Blvd.)

Albert's (former Baja Brothers location)

There are literally dozens of other restaurants in the La Mesa-Mount Helix area that serve burritos. And while we couldn't list them all, if we're missing one from the list, let us know in the comments.

Voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday. Ties will be broken by whichever course has the most positive comments in the section below. We will announce the winner at noon Friday.

So tell us what your favorite locale is in this battle of the burritos.

Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results and reviews on Patch Places. Please vote only once per survey, per Patch.

Nacho's (the corner of University and Parks) is by far the best. They also serve the finest carnitas tacos on Earth. When it was time to move from our last home, our first priority was to find a place close to Nacho's. BTW, they used to be called "Los Cuates".

Best burritos in town are in La Mesa. Don't ever eat a burrito in El Cajon though. The Cajon zone is a wasteland of Mexican cuisine.

You and I are on opposite ends of the scale. Los Pinos is the worst taco shop that I've ever eaten at. To each his own.

Other than Mexico there is no Mexican food east of Yuma Az or north of Bakersfield Ca. We have it all here in So Ca.

I'm on the north side of the freeway and tend to stay over here. I really like Rigoberto's burritos. They are huge and all of the ingredients are fresh and quality. El Azteca just doesn't strike my fancy.

Rita's Mex Food on 2nd/Main Street in El Cajon is damn good! Also Albert's on old Hwy 80 and La Palapa in Lakeside. But my favorite is JV's on Morena Blvd (Surf and Turf). Thank goodness for Mexican food.

Mentioned Los PInos because it wasn't on the list and I like their carnitas burrito (but not other items) Thought El Azteca and Rigobertos were very good (not great) At least Rubio's isn't on the list ! Valentine's (842 Market, downtown SD) is probably my favorite http://www.valmexfood.com
