Eat Your Breakfast: Readers Choice Poll Asks For Your Favorite Breakfast Spots

The weekly Readers' Choice polls highlight the best La Mesa-Mount Helix has to offer in every imaginable topic.

Update: Monday, March 26 1:15 p.m.

Due to high demand, two candidates for Best Breakfast Spot have been added to the poll:

Votes for these options in the comments section will be added to the final tally.

Original story:

It's said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. If that's true, than where you choose to eat breakfast is one of the most importance decisions you can make in your day, right?

With that in mind, this week's Readers’ Choice poll highlights the best breakfast spots near La Mesa-Mount Helix. We need your votes to help us figure out which nearby eatery is your favorite place to help start your day.

Here are some of our favorite places, but if we’re leaving one off of the list that’s in the area, let us know in the comments and we’ll add it.

Voting closes at 9 a.m. Friday. Ties will be broken by whichever course has the most positive comments in the section below. We will announce the winner at noon Friday.

So tell us what your favorite place is to spend a time throwing down breakfast. And don't forget to tell us in the comments below why.

Because this poll is not scientific, it is not the sole consideration in choosing a winner. The winner will be determined by the Patch editor, based on poll results and reviews on Patch Places. Please vote only once per survey, per Patch.

We used to love Gio's but I have to say that Mario's is probably my favorite Sunday breakfast place place.

Dz Akins for sure!
Claire Kelly March 26, 2012 at 03:19 PM
Janet's in El Cajon and Alpine are right up there with the very top. Great atmosphere and service . . . .
Kathy March 26, 2012 at 03:28 PM
The Lunch Box should definitely be in the running
Gloria Laube March 26, 2012 at 03:48 PM
Gus's on Baltimore near Lake Murray -- good food for a fair price, & a patio so the dog can come along. Not exactly La Mesa/Helix but close by: Gillespie Field Airport Cafe -- good food, sometimes a wait, fun to watch the planes, friendly staff, and the dog can come along here, too. Country Waffles on East Main in El Cajon -- perfect waffles, friendly place, fair prices.
Julia Allen March 26, 2012 at 04:09 PM
Agree with Gus's good food at a fair price. Shirley's on University is an old time favorite...good food, service, price and especially great coffee.

The Lunch Box located @ La Mesa Blvd & Jackson Dr. I have not even been there yet and I know they are good because everyone is talking about them and I am familiar with the owners previous establishments

The pic for the article looks enticing. Would like to know where to go to test for myself.
Jay Steiger March 26, 2012 at 04:45 PM
There are many locations with delicious breakfasts already listed, but I would certainly agree with several others that The Lunch Box should be on this list as well. Good and affordable food, nice atmosphere, friendly service, and a central location.
David Bongiorno March 26, 2012 at 05:03 PM
This article should becompletely scrubbed and redone. Start with "Nominations" and then take the top 10 and THEN have a vote. Def get the donut shops off the list. Maybe have a future "Best Donuts" pole so as not to hurt there feelings. The restaurants should only be in La Mesa / Grossmont area or with in 3 miles of border. What say ? Lets do it ! "Best Breakfast", "Best Lunch", "Best Dinner" "Best Value" etc. I always enjoy new dining experiences, especially local ones. Part of the experience is good value, I hate having my wallet lifted, food seems to taste better if reasonable or of outstanding value.

I love the Lunch Box! Great service and everything is exceptional!
DEXTER LEVY March 26, 2012 at 07:34 PM
Dave B. I think you are on Target when you ask Eric to totally scrub & redo the Article & Yes he needs to get off the Mount a bit more! For those of us who live west of the Village and without Donut's; (TOTALLY DIFFERENT) I have to agree with Julia Allen, for Breakfast within La Mesa it has to be "Shirley's" on University. I remember the location, as YES a Donut Shop! It's an old time regular eatery, it has survived over years & thru several owners, despite all this, it has not lost any of it's Local Charm, It seems like everyone know's one another. Its a very friendly place with both staff and patrons all talking together, Helix Sports, & yes even some Local Politics. On occasion you may even see several San Diego Police Officers enjoying Breakfast. Of Course there is the FOOD, Its GOOD, reasonably priced and served fast & hot. When one puts all this together, Good Old Home Cooked Chicken Fried Stake, Machaca and of course Shirley's Special (2 Eggs, Bacon, Ham or Sausage, Toast, Pancakes or English Muffin) "Like the Photo" you can't beat the combination! Friends & Good Eats! <> NOW THIS IS BREAKFAST!

Very hungry now. Thanks a lot you guys. I wish I was able to eat out ths much. I have been to Cosmos Coffee. Love the atmosphere. Anything right in the village has to get at least one vote. My daughter loves Centifonti's.

The people have spoken! Due to popular demand Mario's and the Lunch Box have been added to the poll. The original omission of these was unintentional and (apparently) egregious! Votes in the comments section for these will be counted in the final tally. Thanks everyone for commenting. Let's keep the convo going!

Lake Murray Cafe outshines every other breakfast place I've ever eaten at. And I must agree: donut shops for breakfast??? Please. The concept of having the readers nominate their favorites first, then choosing the top nominees for everyone else to vote on makes SO MUCH MORE sense than what I'm reading in the article. Hello? Anyone home?

I'm goimg to the Lunch Box tomorrow for the 1st time. Will post here what I think and put in my vote tomorrow night.

Anybody tried Elsas Kitchen ? Located on El Cajon Blvd @ 70th st (north side behind gas station) Fantastic and scary cheap ! Breakfast is very good. But try the "Chicken Snack" only $4.50 and its a meal. 2 pieces of grilled marinated chicken, rice and gyro bread. If you don't like it , I will eat it ! This is by far the best value lunch or dinner. WARNING very casual .mostly take out.. Do not go there for a 1st date or you will probably not get a second date.

Mario's is the place for me. Menudo on a lazy Sunday morning with the sports page and I'm a happy man.
Michael Cargill March 27, 2012 at 06:26 AM
Oh yes, I totally dig DZ's! I just love looking at all the celeb pics while I dine.
Michael Cargill March 27, 2012 at 06:29 AM
Cosmos is cool. It's almost like Gelato Vero in Hillcrest. All Cosmos needs is ice cream.
Chris Jennewein (Editor) March 27, 2012 at 01:59 PM
I love D.Z. Akins. Great food and giant portions. I'd also vote for it as the best lunch place.
David Bongiorno March 28, 2012 at 04:37 AM
THE LUNCH BOX ! OMG ! It was everything and more than what I ever expected it to be. I pull right up front at about 10:15AM..I see the beautiful sign in front "Breakfast $3.95" ..No waiting, I am so there... I do a walk through, get acclimated . I order 2 eggs sunny side up, potato's, toast. the place is spotless clean, dark hardwood floors and decor reminds me of a modern Grammas house. The food and portions were perfect. There was even a copy of the LA Times there that an early bird customer leaves off pretty regularly. I have found a new home ! I encourage everyone to try this breakfast. How can it get any better ? I am voting for "The Lunch Box" !
David Bongiorno March 28, 2012 at 04:43 AM
Hey Dexter, Do you think the photo is from Shirleys ? I remember when it was a Vietnamese restaurant in the early '80's and IT was pretty good. I will be re-visiting Shirleys soon, have not been there in a while. It was always pretty good except some parking issues during peak feeding time,
Bobbi March 29, 2012 at 12:52 PM
Definitely The Lunch Box! I stop there on a regular basis and when I am out of town I compare everyone to them. Few measure up. Wonder what their breakfast specials will be today?!
David Bongiorno March 29, 2012 at 01:10 PM
I am going there again this morning to test the French Toast. My second visit ever and in the same week ! Can't stop myself...
Cathy Fiorelli March 30, 2012 at 01:26 AM
Antique row or is that considered lemon grove? Otherwise I'd say Marios
