Video: Board President Defensive During Heated Otay Water District Meeting

Last Wednesday, the board voted 4-1 to approve a "lifetime benefits" package for District employees, despite more than 100 angry ratepayers asking the board to reconsider.

Much has already been written and reported about the and their for "lifetime benefits," for their employees.

The measure was approved with a vote of 4-1, with only boardmember Mark Robak voting no.

During the meeting, more than 100 ratepayers were in attendance, and their frustration with the measure, and the board's perceived lack of acknowledgment of their concerns was evident, especially in the midst of a 7.7 percent water rate increase.

During his closing remarks, Board President Jaime Bonilla claimed that the board members had received emails threatening their families, and that the misinformation about the proposal was generated by the San Diego Taxpayers Association for its own political gain.

Tempers flared as one man in attendance called Bonilla a liar. Bonilla was similarly dismissive of the crowd when he said, "Until now, I guarantee you that 99 percent of you have never been to our meetings."
