Unclaimed Funds Sitting in County Coffers

The county can transfer money that goes unclaimed for more than three years to the general fund.

If you’ve done business with the county in the past three years, you may have money owed to you. San Diego County is currently holding more than 900 unclaimed accounts, including property tax and other county departments’ refunds, totaling nearly $250,000 and residents have until Oct. 14 to claim the money before it is transferred to the county’s general fund.

“You may be entitled to a refund and may not be aware of it,” San Diego County Treasurer-Tax Collector Dan McAllister said in a statement. “We have been diligently searching for the owners of these monies and have had no luck. We hope that the owners come forward and claim their refund(s) before the Oct. 14 deadline.”

The county currently holds $131,000 in unclaimed property tax refunds and another $122,000 in refunds from various county departments for consumers that have dealt with the county during the past three years. The lowest amount available is $10.02 and the highest is $16,800 to the estate of Elizabeth Beal.

Current state law allows monies that remain unclaimed for more than three years and property tax refunds that are unclaimed for more than four years to be turned over to the county’s general fund.
