San Diegans Smell Something Strange in the Air

See this and other news from around San Diego County from the past week.

Here's a roundup of news from San Diego County for the week:

– There’s something in the air, as San Diegans have reported a strange smell in the air this week. Residents throughout the county have called fire departments complaining of a strange “fuel-like” smell. Officials are still trying to figure out where the smell originates, but air tests show the air is not dangerous or possess any health threat.

– Weevils are causing concern in San Diego County. Officials held a meeting Aug. 18 to talk about the exotic bug that could harm local plants. The black, South American Palm Weevils slightly resembles a beetle and has been spotting in San Ysidro and near the border. Officials are still deciding the seriousness of the Weevil sightings, but they are considered pests that can threaten certain local palms.

– County officials are reminding parents to be cautious around water to prevent child deaths. So far this year, six children younger than two year old have died in San Diego County in water-related deaths. These “silent deaths” generally occur near family pools and Jacuzzis. Even only two inches of water is enough for a child to drown, officials caution.

– Hantavirus was found in two rodents this week. Rodents carrying the virus that find their way into homes and residences can spread the virus – which is deadly in about 38 percent of cases, officials say. County officials urge San Diegans to rid their homes of rodents to prevent the spread of Hantavirus. Make sure to open windows and bleach affected areas, do not sweep or vacuum infested areas.

– A sewer line broke Thursday spilling 31,650 gallons of sewage in Carlsbad. The spill occurred at Meadowlark Water Reclamation Facility on Corinthia Street. The spill was noted at 8 a.m. and 10 minutes later crews diverted water back to the facility.
