Rep. Susan Davis Voices Concerns About Possible Government Shutdown

A budget resolution must be signed by Sept. 30 to avoid a federal government shutdown.

Rep. Susan Davis said Friday she voted against the Republican majority’s government funding bill because it "threatens our economy and the interests of the middle class" and could lead a government shutdown.

The bill would end funding for the Affordable Care Act, knows as Obamacare, and continue the federal budget sequestration with deep cuts in military spending. The bill passed on a vote of 230-189.

It now goes to the Senate, where Democrats have said it will be amended and sent back to the House.

“We face tough choices on how to resolve our fiscal disagreements, but a government shutdown or a default is exactly the wrong answer,” the Democratic Congresswomen said in a statement.

“Every day, people all across our country figure out how to get their jobs done, despite all sorts of disagreements. But for some reason, people here in Washington seem to have forgotten how to work together.”

Davis said the budget resolution as currently worded would be vetoed by President Obama “because it advances a narrow ideological agenda that threatens our economy and the interests of the middle class.”

Davis' 53rd District includes La Mesa, Lemon Grove, El Cajon and large parts of San Diego and Chula Vista.
