Orange They Proud: Mayor Delivers Winnings of Wager to Helix Coach

Art Madrid hands over box of mandarins he won in bet with mayor of Loomis on state title game.

Mayor Art Madrid received his football winnings at Christmas time. But he delayed their unveiling until Tuesday night.  A 14-pound box of mandarin oranges from former Loomis Mayor Rhonda Morillas—the result of a wager over the Division II state football title game Dec. 17—went to Helix head coach Troy Starr at the start of the City Council meeting.

Madrid also read a city proclamation and presented a framed version of it to Starr, who stood before a small audience alongside Helix executive director Rani Goyal, athletic director Damon Chase and assistant football coach Maury Cole—a former Highlander student who now coaches running backs.

Making brief statements were running back Darrion Hancock and offensive lineman Denning Crenshaw. Goyal thanked her coaches and spoke of the definition of a team—then invited the community to an 8:30 a.m. pep rally Wednesday at Helix’s gym.
