MoveOn.Org Calls for Protest Rally at Duncan Hunter Offices in El Cajon

Members told that gatherings at noon Tuesday will express fear about Republicans driving "nation off an economic cliff."

Update at 8:40 p.m. Monday: Rep. Duncan Hunter voted against the debt bill and told the Union-Tribune: "When we should be talking about what our military needs to keep us safe and prepare for future threats, there’s a misconception that security spending is what put the country in this fiscal sinkhole and the only way out is to cut national defense. … The future of U.S. security should not be handed over to a 12-person super panel. Its decisions or inability to reach an agreement could ultimately break our military or bring it very close to that point.”

Update at 6 p.m. Sunday: President Obama announced that a deal had been reached with congressional leaders to avoid a default. See this report for latest details.

Saying that “Republicans are about to push our nation off an economic cliff,” the liberal group MoveOn.org has called for a protest rally outside the district office of GOP Rep. Duncan D. Hunter at noon Tuesday.

Hunter—whose 52nd Congressional District includes La Mesa, Poway, Santee, Spring Valley and Ramona—will be among hundreds of targets of the activist group.

“Over the next 48 hours, we need to mobilize as many of our neighbors, family and friends as possible to demand the Republicans stop playing dangerous political games and do what's right for America,” MoveOn said in email to members Sunday morning.

MoveOn sent the email as Washington lawmakers continued to negotiate an increase in the nation’s debt ceiling—with a deadline of Tuesday to avoid a potential default.

The protests, MoveOn said, will show “our outrage that (Republicans have) held our whole economy hostage to force cuts to vital programs and to protect tax breaks for corporations and millionaires.”

The group added: “President Obama has repeatedly requested that we, the American people, ‘let Congress know’ how we feel. This is our opportunity to demand that Republicans in Congress support a plan that works for the American people—not just the rich and corporations.”

Hunter’s El Cajon office is at 1870 Cordell Court, suite 206 .
