Ferret Fans, Unite! La Mesan Begins Renewed Push for Ownership in State

Pat Wright announces Thursday event at his home to seek legislative action on his pet project.

La Mesa’s Pat Wright—leader of the drive to legalize ferret ownership in California—is sharpening his teeth for another try, according to the Los Angeles Times.

“A party at which volunteers will address information packets to state legislators is set for Thursday night at [Wright’s] La Mesa home,” wrote Tony Perry in a blog post Monday.

Perry said Wright also is recruiting ferret owners to testify at a Feb. 2 meeting of the state Fish and Game Commission in Sacramento.

“I don’t want insults or sarcasm used.” Wright says in his newsletter. “Just, ‘Hey, I’m a Californian, and this issue is important to me.’”

In an October 2010 La Mesa Patch profile,  Wright said: “There has never been a documented case of ferrets spreading rabies ... anywhere in the U.S. The Centers for Disease Control rates them as the safest pet except for guinea pigs.”

Wright can be reached via his website, legalizeferrets.org.
