Duncan Hunter Responds on Gadhafi's Death: 'This will help the Libyan people'

Gadhafi's death offers a way to move forward but there are still challenges for Libyans, says Joe Kasper of Hunter's office.

The world woke Thursday to various news reports of deposed Libyan leader Muammar Gadhafi's death. Libya's Prime Minister Mahmoud Jibril then confirmed the killing.

Gadfafi was toppled from his military rule by NATO-backed rebel forces on Aug. 21. News agencies Thursday reported that his hometown of Sirte had been taken over and he had been killed.

Rep. Duncan D. Hunter of San Diego county's 52nd Congressional District was a supporter of the initial intervention in Libya and was also insistent on the need for NATO and not the U.S. to take the lead role, according to Hunter's spokesman in Washington, D.C., Joe Kasper.

Patch asked Hunter's office for a comment Thursday morning about Gadhafi's death.

"Nothing was likely to change without removing Gadhafi from his position of authority," Kasper said. "This will help the Libyan people more forward but they still have a long road ahead. There are challenges still, but the work toward reconciliation can now begin without the risk of a Gadhafi resurgence."
