Woman Assaulted in Homeless Encampment in Spring Valley

A passerby called deputies to the 9400 block of Campo Road about 9:40 p.m. Thursday after finding the woman lying on a sidewalk in the area, according to sheriff's deputies.

An investigation was under way Friday into the assault of a 44-year-old woman in a homeless encampment in a Spring Valley canyon.

A passerby called deputies to the 9400 block of Campo Road about 9:40 p.m. Thursday after finding the woman lying on a sidewalk in the area, according to San Diego County sheriff's Sgt. Trinidad Tejeda.

The injured woman told deputies she was assaulted in a nearby canyon, the sergeant said in a statement.

Deputies detained five people in the nearby canyon for questioning but no one was arrested, Tejeda said.

The woman was taken to a hospital, where the possibility of a sexual assault was ruled out, he said. The extent of the woman's injuries was not immediately reported, but Tejeda said she was the victim of an assault likely to produce great bodily injury.
