A fuel spill involving a HAZMAT clean up at the intersection of Murray and Severin Drives due to an accident with a trash truck restricted traffic for hours on Monday.

Murray Drive going west from Severin Drive, and the Interstate 8 west onramp was closed to traffic from about 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

According to the CHP website, 100 gallons of diesel fuel spilled in an accident involving an EDCO garbage truck resulting in an overturned green waste cargo container. Personell from the La Mesa Fire Department, CHP HAZMAT and EDCO were on scene working to remove the container from the onramp.

The CHP also notified the Department of Fish and Game and the Coast Guard that they were able to stop the fuel before it entered a storm drain. HAZMAT workers could be seen working downhill from the spill and blocks away in a residential area.

No injuries resulted from the accident, said the CHP.
