The unidentified victim was hit in the slow lane so hard by a Honda and other cars that his body was severed into several sections, which were covered by tarps while the Highway Patrol and Heartland Fire and Rescue investigated.

No motorists were hurt, said CHP Sgt. Damian Budwine, briefing reporters.

TV news crews trained their cameras on the victim for an hour as the Highway Patrol conducted its initial checks and interviewed witnesses. At least eight vehicles stopped on either side of the freeway to provide testimony or to help.

Budwine told reporters that a woman called 911 about 10:20 p.m. to say that her Honda had hit a man in the No. 3 lane.

The woman, who appeared to be in her 50s, said that other vehicles also hit the man, reporters were told.

The victim’s race or ethnicity wasn’t disclosed.

“Honestly, I'd hate to characterize [ethnicity] because the body has been severely damaged,” Budwine said. “So I'd hate to mislead anyone about that.”
