Parts of Mission Trails Regional Park Will Be Closed Today

The so-called "Trails Fire" was about 70 percent contained as of Sunday night, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department.

Parts of Mission Trails Regional Park will be closed today as crews work to extinguish a fire that charred about 95 acres and injured a firefighter, fire officials said.

Father Junipero Serra Trail will be closed from Gate 1 to Gate 10, along with the Climbers Loop, Oak Grove Loop and Kwaay Paay Trail, according to San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson. The Mission Trails Regional Park visitor center will also be closed because of the fire, which was reported on Kwaay Paay Peak around 2:15 p.m. Sunday.

Crews from six engine companies and six hand crews were working to contain the fire overnight, Swanson said.

Swanson said the firefighters were facing steep terrain and loose footing on the hillsides, requiring them to exercise "considerable caution."

A firefighter sustained heat-related injuries and was taken to a hospital Sunday, Swanson said. All hikers were accounted for, and no other injuries were reported, he said.
