More Traffic Enforcement Measures Coming to La Mesa Police with Grant

The La Mesa Police Department made the following announcement on Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012:

A $55,000 grant awarded by the Office of Traffic Safety to the La Mesa Police Department. The La Mesa Police Department is dedicated to keeping our roadways safe through both enforcement and education.

Chief Ed Aceves said, “Our citizens expect and deserve a quality of life that is not affected by unsafe acts upon the roadway.  This grant arms us with additional tools to enforce and improve our response to traffic safety issues.”  

The Selective Traffic Enforcement Program (STEP) grant is to assist in efforts to deal with increased traffic safety problems and reduce the number of persons killed and injured in traffic collisions.  The grant activities will specifically target speed offenders, drivers distracted via cell phone use and motorcycle safety.  The La Mesa Police Department will conduct special operations which will include speed enforcement, cell phone/texting enforcement and motorcycle safety enforcement.

The first of this kind of operation will take place this Friday, November 23, 2012 with the enforcement being conducted throughout the City of La Mesa.

Funding for the grant comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
