Man With Handbag Robs La Mesa Credit Union

The thief handed a demand note to the teller on Thursday. The written message stated that the bandit had a gun.

A man with a handbag slung over his shoulder robbed an East County credit union office this afternoon, authorities reported.

The thief—who appeared to be in his mid-20s—handed a demand note to a teller at the North Island Federal Credit Union branch in the 7900 block of El Cajon Boulevard in La Mesa shortly after 2 p.m., police said.

The written message stated that the bandit had a gun, though none was seen, Lt. Matt Nicholass said.

After the employee handed over an undisclosed amount of money, the robber left the building and walked out of the area to the north, through a strip mall parking lot.

He was described as about a 5-foot-7-inch, 150-pound white man wearing blue jeans, a red sports-style jacket and white shoes, Nicholass said.
