Man Severely Burned Escaping Spring Valley Mobile Home Fire

The fire broke out in a mobile home at Avalon Estates, in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue.

A man was rushed to the UCSD Burn Center late Tuesday night after he sustained burns running through flames to escape a mobile home in Spring Valley.

According to Calfire/San Miguel Fire District, the fire fully engulfed a mobile home at Avalon Estates, in the 1200 block of Grand Avenue. Two of its four residents were home when the fire broke out.

The victim, a young man of unspecified age, sustained severe to moderate burns on an estimated 25 percent of his body as he tried escaping through the front door. He was given stabilizing care on the scene and then rushed to the UCSD Burn Center.

Another resident, a female, broke a bedroom window and escaped the flames.

Neighbors did report hearing smoke alarms going off. The double-wide mobile home was constructed with two doors, but one was blocked with an upright freezer, preventing it from being used as an exit, according to a fire spokesperson.

In addition to CAL FIRE/San Miguel Fire District firefighters, crews from San Diego and Lemon Grove responded to help keep the damage to a single unit.
No other units were damaged. The estimated loss for the structure and  its contents is $100,000. The cause of the fire is unknown as of yet, and an investigation is ongoing.

The San Diego Chapter of the American Red Cross is now assisting the family with their immediate needs.
