Man Killed on Route 125 Identified as a Federal Firefighter in San Diego

Patrick William Sheely, 29, of San Diego was struck by several cars the night of Oct. 3 near Fletcher Parkway overpass.

The county Medical Examiner’s Office has identified the 29-year-old man killed Oct. 3 while crossing state Route 125 north of the Fletcher Parkway overpass.

Patrick William Sheely of San Diego died of multiple blunt-force injuries when struck by several cars on southbound Route 125, a medical investigator said Friday.

The investigator said the manner of Sheely’s death is still under investigation—and couldn’t say whether he was trying to commit suicide.

Among the first at the scene were crews from Heartland Fire & Rescue, including firefighters from La Mesa.

They might not have known that Sheely was a fellow firefighter—a member of IAFF Local F-33 based at Station FS12.

“This past week, we lost a fellow brother, Patrick Sheely,” said an Oct. 9 post on the labor union’s website. “He is survived by two young children, father, mother, and stepfather. Now is the time to band together and help support his family.”

The site said a memorial account had been set up at Union Bank: Federal Firefighters Assn. Memo: Patrick Sheely. Account No. 0071843478

Memorial services for Sheely are set for noon Sunday, Oct. 30, at Greenwood Memorial Park & Mortuary on Imperial Avenue in San Diego, according to the funeral home’s website.

The accident involving Sheely about 10:20 p.m. that Monday halted southbound traffic for three hours, the CHP said.

He was hit in the slow lane by a Honda and other cars, but no motorists were hurt, said CHP Sgt. Damian Budwine.

At least eight vehicles stopped on either side of the freeway to provide testimony or to help.

Budwine said  a woman called 911 about 10:20 p.m. to say that her Honda had hit a man in the No. 3 lane.
