La Mesa Woman Killed In Hit-And-Run

The incident occurred in the 300 block of Orlando Street in El Cajon.

Authorities on Monday identified the 51-year-old woman who was fatally struck as she tried to climb out of a moving pickup truck on an El Cajon street.

Maria Josephine Newman of La Mesa was a passenger in an older model pickup truck headed north in the 300 block of Orlando Street near E. Main Street shortly after noon Saturday, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office reported.

Newman was spotted hanging on to the truck's passenger side before falling off and being hit, according to El Cajon police. The driver sped away, police said.

She died at the scene.

The suspect's vehicle was described as a light blue 1969 to 1972 Chevy pickup with a white stripe and a faded white camper shell. The truck may have some type of construction sign on the driver's door. The identity of the male driver was unknown.

Police asked anyone with information on the crash or the driver's whereabouts to call 619-441-1632.

The story isn't clear to me. Was the victim hit by the truck she fell out of? Or was she hit by another truck?

She was hit by the truck she seems to be escaping from. Really weird incident.
