La Mesa Police Issue Nearly 60 Tickets for 'Distracted Driving'

The crackdown, funded by a grant, was conducted to educate motorists about the dangers of cell phone use while driving.

Those who were texting or using their cell phones while driving in La Mesa Friday morning learned their lessons the hard way.

La Mesa police issued 56 tickets to motorists engaging in “distracted driving,” plus two  tickets for other offenses and 13 warnings.

Police said it was the 10th time they have used the Traffic Safety Enforcement Program to encourage drivers to keep their eyes on the road to limit accidents, injuries and deaths.

The department's operation was funded via a federal grant issued through the state Office of Traffic Safety.

A Lakeside man who died Wednesday in a Poway wreck is though to have been texting or receiving a text while driving.
