La Mesa Police Cite 21 in Motorcycle Safety Crackdown

After a two-year drop in motorcycle fatalities, the numbers are on the rise again. Officers want both motorcyclists and car drivers to be more aware.

La Mesa police ticketed 21 motorists during a recent operation designed to encourage both vehicle and motorcycle drivers to be safer.

Police focused on areas where motorcycle crashes are more frequent. In addition to the citations, one motorcyclist's license was found to be suspended so his bike was impounded due.

The operation, funded by a state grant backed by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, took place Friday.

State statistics show the main causes of motorcycle crashes include speeding, unsafe turns and impairment due to alcohol and other drugs.

Police encouraged motorists to use the California Motorcyclist Safety Program if they need more information.
