Several East County high school swimmers, who got their first experience of competition through Heartland Swim Association's Summer League, dominated the winner's list at the Grossmont Hills League Swim Finals on Saturday, May 17 at Granite Hills High School.

Michael Salazar, a junior at Valhalla, set meet records in the male 200 Yard Freestyle and male 100 Yard Butterfly.

Julia Toronczak, a senior at West Hills, broke the meet record in the female 100 Yard Backstroke.

Jordan Gueniot, a senior at Steele Canyon, won the female 50 Yard Freestyle and 100 Yard Butterfly.

Nicco Birdsong, a junior at Valhalla, won the male 50 and 100 Yard Freestyle.

Aubrey Bailey, a senior at Granite Hills, won the female 200 Yard Individual Medley.

Shawn Howen, a senior at Steele Canyon, won the male 500 Yard Freestyle.

Elizabeth Horn, a junior at Valhalla, won the female 100 Yard Freestyle.

In addition, nearly every event had Heartland Swim Association members in the Final and Consolation rounds.

"Many of the high school swimmers who competed at the league finals started in Summer League while in elementary or middle school," said Heartland Swim Association (HSA) President Pat Tope.

He added, "Credit for their success not only goes to the student-athlete's love of swimming but also to their families who chose to give them an early start in the sport by enrolling them in the Summer League Program which covers nearly every community in the East County".

Registration for the 2014 Summer League program is now underway. Heartland Summer League begins June 23 and is designed for swimmers of all abilities from the ages of 6 to 18.  Practices are held three days a week with competitive swim meets held on three weekends in July.  The Summer League culminates in an All-Team Championship Meet at Granite Hills High School on August 2 & 3.

Team locations include: El Cajon High School, El Capitan High School, Grossmont High School, La Mesa Municipal, Monte Vista High School, Montgomery Middle School, Santana High School, Steele Canyon High School, Valhalla High School, and West Hills High School.

The cost for the Heartland Summer League program is $195.  Families with multiple swimmers are entitled to a discounted price of $185 for the 2nd swimmer and $155 for each additional swimmer.
