Grant Helps San Miguel Fire District Add AEDs

The District will add 20 life-saving devices to its Brush, Truck, Rescue, OES and staff vehicles.

A FEMA grant totalling about $40,000 will allow the to add 20 automatic external defibrillators (AEDs) to its life-saving arsenal. These additions will allow San Miguel personnel to help provide emergency assistance and critical care to heart attack victims in a more expedient way.

The grant was applied for by San Miguel Fire District’s Division Chief of Operations, Gary Croucher. Croucher said that he hopes the units will be installed in the next 30 to 60 days.

An AED is a portable electronic device that device that automatically
diagnoses the potentially life threatening cardiac arrhythmias or ventricular fibrillation and ventricular tachycardia in patients. If necessary the AED is able to treat the person through the application of electrical therapy, which stops the arrhythmia, allowing the heart to reestablish an effective rhythm.
