Friday Night DUI Checkpoint Wasn't Super for 11 Drivers

Cars were impounded for violations, but no drunken-driving arrests were made as 765 vehicles were stopped in the 3800 block of Massachusetts Avenue.

Super Bowl weekend wasn't a winner for 11 drivers Friday night on Massachusetts Avenue. Their cars were impounded in a DUI and driver's license checkpoint.

But in contrast to December's checkpoint in south La Mesa, no drunken-driving arrests were made in the six-hour checkpoint Friday, according to the La Mesa Police Department. On Dec. 17, two arrests were made for driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

  • 765 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint.
  • 27 drivers were taken into the secondary inspection area.
  • 4 of those drivers were further evaluated for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.
  • 1 driver was cited for possession of marijuana in a vehicle.
  • 19 citations were issued for vehicle code violations.
  • 11 vehicles were impounded for driver's license violations.

"This checkpoint is another reminder from the La Mesa Police Department that
driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license will not be
tolerated," said police Sgt. Peter Andersson.

La Mesa police were aided by officers from the San Diego County Probation Department. Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
