Seven Arrested at DUI Checkpoint on University Avenue

La Mesa police says 21 cars were impounded in 6-hour check that also included inspection of driver's licenses.

Seven drivers were arrested Saturday night in the latest DUI checkpoint, said La Mesa police Sgt. Peter Andersson. One was for felony possession of narcotics and four on suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

The La Mesa Police Department conducted the DUI and Driver License checkpoint in the 7100 block of University Avenue, according to a news release.  The checkpoint lasted six hours.

Andersson told the following results:

  • 896 vehicles traveled through the checkpoint.
  • 30 drivers were taken into the secondary inspection area.
  • 7 drivers were further evaluated for driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.  Four of those drivers were arrested for driving under the influence.
  • 1 driver was arrested for felony possession of narcotics. Two drivers were arrested for outstanding warrants.
  • 25 citations were issued for vehicle code violations.
  • 21 vehicles were impounded for driver's license violations.

"This checkpoint is another reminder from the La Mesa Police Department that driving under the influence of alcohol and driving without a license will not be tolerated," Andersson said.

Funding for this program was provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
