Updated: Firefighters Attack East County Brush Fire by Land and Air

It took ground and airborne personnel about an hour today to subdue a brush fire that threatened homes and forced evacuations near Sweetwater Reservoir.

The non-injury blaze erupted shortly after 3 p.m. alongside the west side of State Route 125, near Jamacha Boulevard in Spring Valley, according to Cal Fire.

Deputies cleared people out of several homes along nearby Elkelton Boulevard as engine crews fought the flames with help from a water-dropping helicopter, said Kendal Bortisser, a fire captain with the state agency.

The blaze blackened about two acres. The flames damaged no homes but did scorch a shed, Bortisser said.

The cause was under investigation.
