Family Displaced After Garage Fire In Casa de Oro

San Miguel Fire District spokesperson Leonard Villareal says the blaze caused about $25,000 in damages.

A fire that started in an adjoining garage displaced a family Wednesday on Tropico Drive in Casa de Oro.

The non-injury blaze was apparently started by spontaneous combustion and tore through the garage, causing an estimated $25,000 in damage, according to spokesman Leonard Villareal.

Neighbors reported the fire just after 8 a.m. San Miguel crews responded and were able to extinguish the fire within 10 minutes of arriving. The family of two was able to escape unharmed, along with their five pets: two cats, two dogs and a bird. Villareal said that the fire also knocked out electrical service to the home.

The family will be aided by the American Red Cross, who will work with them to secure temporary lodging. Fire investigators said that the fire was likely caused by rags soaked in solvent or oil that spontaneously caught fire. Villareal added that no vehicles were in the garage at the time of the fire.
