DUI Fugitives Warned About Police Sweep on Monday

La Mesa Police Department is targeting those who skip court date or violate terms of probation. Deployment aims to clear warrants on the books for the past year.

La Mesa police say they will be "hot on the tails" of people who fail to show in court  or violate terms of their probation in DUI cases—driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

On Monday, according to a La Mesa Police Department news release, "officers will deploy throughout the city to residences and places of business to clear court warrants on the books for the past year."

Police Sgt. Peter Andersson said: "There are literally hundreds of DUI warrants in the system. Some of the people are hoping they can put it off for a long time and not have to deal with it. We're letting the public know that if they don't take care of it by going to court, we're going to come find them and take them to jail."

A news release was sent media outlets Thursday afternoon with the headline "You Can Run but You Can’t Hide."

"Those caught [in the DUI sweep] often face additional jail time for failing to appear in court or for violating probation," said the release. "When family, friends, and co-workers find out, violators can also face tremendous inconveniences

Funding for the sweep is provided by a grant from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, police said.
