Deputies Broke Up 20-Man Brawl at Carlton Oaks Bar and Grill

Sheriff's Department says number and intensity of fights at the Santee bar have risen in the last year, with barstools and beer bottles used as weapons.

The Santee Sheriff's Department has responded to at least seven fights at Carlton Oaks Golf Course since January, including a 20-man "old western style brawl" in October, according to sheriff's Sgt. Tom Poulin.

The fights don't only happen in the bar—they've broken out in the parking lot and surrounding grounds of the golf course. In each of those cases deputies were called once the fight has gone beyond the control of Carlton Oaks security.

"When the Sheriff's Dept. is called in to deal with such a fight all available units respond, causing a serious drain on local law enforcement resources," said Poulin.

A major brawl in the bar on October 11 involved about 20 subjects, and at least one was swinging a bar stool, with others using beer bottles as weapons. Two people were hospitalized following that incident, with lacerations to the face and head.

Two Santee brothers, aged 27 and 30, are suspected of instigating the fight. A warrant has been issued for one of the suspects, a member of the armed forces who will be transferred from overseas to face charges.

The Sheriff's Dept. has made five DUI arrests in the area of Carlton Oaks in the last year, which doesn't include CHP arrests, and according Poulin, the CHP patrols the area regularly.

Poulin said Carlton Oaks is working with the Sheriff's Dept. and the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to do what's necessary to prevent these fights before they get out of control.

Their liquor license needs to be reduced to wine and beer only permanently. If severe problems continue then remove the license.

You are exactly right! They need to stop serving already drunk patrons. Maybe new servers or bartenders are in order.

You posters here are very short sited. Its Santee, East County where there are almost zero nice places to go out and have a drink. Don’t immediately condemn the country club. There are more fights and jerk off drunks in east county then anywhere else I have been in this whole town. Its the people causing the problems more often than not and wishing someone to lose their liquor license a huge money maker for a business is lame. Ive been here at night and on a weekend and there are a lot of rowdy patrons...

I think the bartenders need to be schooled on when to cut people off other than that to say the police have better things to do then break up a bar fight is a joke. Part of their job is to keep the peace doesn't matter where the peace is disturbed. Just because a few unsavory characters want to start trouble is no reason to have such knee jerk reactions. Don't fall victim to domestic terrorism. Make them behave and not dictate where grown responsible people can choose to have a cocktail.

This story does not accurately depict what happend that evening. It is "profiling" the East County people involved. Yes, some EC people go out looking for trouble, but this was NOT this situation. It was a brother defending his brother from a patron who was looking for trouble... The aggressor got more than he bargained for!
