Chargers Linebacker Mouton Teams With Police at Seau Field Kids Camp

"Excellent way to have kids interact with police officers in a nonthreatening way," says coordinator.

More than 60 La Mesa children stormed the Junior Seau Field  Tuesday afternoon for football and fellowship as local law enforcement and the Chargers teamed up for their annual training camp.

Officers from the La Mesa Mesa Police Department, San Diego Police Department, Sheriff’s Department and Probation Department volunteered to coach local boys and girls, 7 to 14, as they went through five running, catching, throwing and tackling drills at the field adjacent to Parkway Middle School.

Starpal.org, a nonprofit law enforcement organization, and the Chargers team up to hold nine free annual football training camps for county youth from San Ysidro to Carlsbad. First-year Chargers linebacker Jonas Mouton cheered on the kids as they laughed and ran from station to station.

“From a police officer’s point of view, it’s an excellent way to have kids interact with police officers in a nonthreatening way,” said Edwin Garrette, a San Diego police officer and coordinator of the annual Starpal camps. “This way they have a good experience with law enforcement.”
