La Mesa Hillside Fire Along SR 125 No Longer Threatening Homes

Officials have called off the evacuations after a car fire started a hillside fire near Garfield Street in La Mesa.

A hillside fire triggered by a car fire along State Route 125 that prompted evacuations in La Mesa has been contained and no longer poses a threat to homes.

Heartland Fire & Rescue issued an advisory at 3:44 p.m. Sunday calling off evacuations that had residents along Garfield Street leaving their homes amid smoke and traffic jams.

"Evacuations no longer needed," the advisory stated. "Fire crews will remain on scene for the next few hours watching for hot spots and mopping up."

The first call about the car fire near Spring Street on SR 125 came in to the California Highway Patrol around 1:47 p.m. Sunday. Soon after, additional fire units were called to help as the fire spread to nearby brush and Garfield Street residents nearby were told to evacuate.

Officials also temporarily shut down some nearby freeway onramps, and there were reports of drivers turning around on the freeway.
