Update: Blind Man’s Stabbing Was Self-Inflicted, La Mesa Police Say

Police found the man on a sidewalk not far from Sharp Grossmont Hospital with a knife in his chest.

A blind man stabbed himself with a knife Sunday, according to La Mesa police.

Officers responding to a report of a person down on a sidewalk on Lambda Lane found a blind man with a knife sticking out of his chest Sunday afternoon, according to a police sergeant.

Early Monday, police Sgt. Bret Richards added: “The victim was conscious and talking, and he was taken to a hospital to undergo surgery. Further investigation by La Mesa police detectives revealed the wound was self-inflicted. The victim was released into the care of proper authorities.”

Officers arrived at Lambda Lane near Parkway Drive around 2:45 p.m. and located the 30-year-old man, police said Sunday. Paramedics transported the wounded man to a hospital. His name and condition were not released.

Police said he was able to talk to officers but the content of his statements have not been released pending further investigation.
